The Citizenship Test is the first step in the naturalization process of being the citizen of the UK. It generally tests the applicant’s proficiency in the English language and his/her knowledge in the politics, geography, economy and history of the country. It also aims in preparing the citizens towards being a dutiful and responsible citizen of the UK and make him aware of his civil rights.
The British Citizenship Test is based on the Life in the UK resource book second edition, “Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship”. The candidate can take the test in any of the three languages, English, Scottish and Welsh; however, English is the more preferred option.
The passing score is 75%, that is, the applicant has to get at least 18 answers correct out of 24 to pass the Life in the UK Test. However, the test can be taken as many times as necessary by the applicant.
The book “Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship” is available online and in various local libraries and book shops. However, the candidate should remember that the test is region-specific. As his/her first step towards the citizenship of UK, the candidates should prepare themselves thoroughly for the test with the latest version of the book.
The candidate has to enroll for the test with a fee of £34.00. He can register himself for the test in any of the 27 test centers or calling the help desk. The candidate has to complete the test within 45 minutes. The results are immediately flashed after the test is over. The applicant is provided with a letter and a code that he has to add to his naturalization form. Therein starts his citizenship process. Any inability to reproduce the letter means that, the applicant has to take the British Citizenship Test again.
The candidate has to take the ESOL course completion certificate if he has done the course. There is no grammar or English test taken along with the Life in the UK Test; the process of the test itself evaluates the candidate’s knowledge in English. The ESOL course also serves the same purpose.
