Rules for British Citizenship, Naturalisation Rules, Life in the UK Test Rules.

The rules and regulations on naturalisation or British Citizenship through Life in the UK Test may alter depending on whether or not you are married to or the civil partner of a British citizen.

Applying for British Citizenship as civil partner or the spouse of a British citizen

To apply for citizenship through Life in the UK Test as a civil partner or a spouse of British Citizen, one should

1. be above 18 years old while applying.
2. be of 'sound mind';
3. Have 'good character';
4. Be a resident of UK for a period of at least 3 years before applying for the British citizenship.
5. Be a resident of UK for a period of at least five years before your application.
6. In this 3 year period, the applicant should not absent from UK for more than 270 days and 90 days in the year in which you are going to apply for naturalization through British Citizenship Test.
7. be a settler of UK at the time of application.
8. Should be proficient in English and communicate in the same as per the norms of Home Office to get the British Citizenship to an acceptable level.
9. Be aware of life in the UK Test and pass a formal British citizenship test before applying for the naturalization.

Applying for naturalization if you are not married or in a civil partnership with a British citizen

You must:

1. be above 18 years old while applying.
2. be of 'sound mind'.
3. Have 'good character'.
4. Be a resident of UK for a period of at least 5 years before applying for the British citizenship.
5. Be a resident of UK for a period of at least five years before your application.
6. In this 5 year period, the applicant should not absent from UK for more than 450 days and 90 days in the year in which you are going to apply for naturalization through British Citizenship Test.
7. be a settler of UK at the time of application for at least one year.
8. Should be proficient in English and communicate in the same as per the norms of Home Office to get the British Citizenship to an acceptable level.
9. Be aware of life in the UK Test and pass a formal British citizenship test before applying for the naturalization.
10. provide a commitment to continue your living in UK.
